A polar animal is any animal that lives in the extremely cold regions of the Arctic (North Pole) or Antarctica (South Pole). To survive in these icy, windy places, they have developed special features and behaviors over time.
These are-
- Insulation- Many have thick fur (like polar bears and Arctic foxes) or a thick layer of fat called blubber (like seals and walruses) to keep them warm.
- Camouflage- Some have coats that change color to blend in with the snow, which helps them hunt or hide from predators. For example, the Arctic fox has a white coat in winter and a brown or gray one in summer.
- Specialized bodies- Many polar animals have smaller ears and limbs to reduce heat loss.
- Unique adaptations- Emperor penguins huddle together in large groups to stay warm in Antarctica.
